![]() ![]() Was able to get away with iso 250, so not too bad!įind out exactly what is causing this blur. I think it's just a case of having too powerful a flash vs the very weak ambient lamps. I was using a beauty dish with a sock, so trying to defuse as much as I can. You are back to the problem of having to cut the light from the flash, but that can be done. What ISO are you using? Your best hope of freezing action is to get the shutter speed up to a decent rate, which you may be able to do with a high ISO. Wondering how you guys would best approach this situation? Am I in a constant trade of because the ambient lamps are so underpowered? You can also use something in front of the flash to cut the power - a piece of white tissue, one of the plastic diffusers sold on ebay or Amazon, a foam plastic cup. If you bounce the flash will contribute to the ambient (depending on the size of the room) which may also help the balance. Then you may be able to open the aperture and/or boost the ISO. How are you using the flash? If you were using direct flash on camera try bouncing it or get it off camera and try a softbox or umbrella. There are ways to cut the light from the flash. This worked better, but the balance between flash and ambiance wasn't as appealing because the flash overpowered the shot. Same flash setting but I was able to get a higher shutter speed. The second method was to shoot at a lower aperture (f1.4). You need to get the shutter speed up.įlash balanced with ambient will not freeze motion with a slow shutter speed, which brings us to your second method. This is pretty much how I would handle it, but as you discovered you cannot freeze action. SS ended up being 1/30 but I got motion blur and the flash didn't seem to freeze the model. The first was to expose for the room via a lower shutter speed and then use my flash (at its lowest setting) to attempt to 'freeze' action. I've tried two different set ups, with varying results, but not sure I'm 100% happy with them. I'm looking to achieve a well lit portrait that shows the lamps in the background. I have a nicely lit room with good ambience, but obviously not enough light to take a well exposed shot. You may have to depend on posing your subject and possibly using a tripod. Sounds to me as if you are on the right track, but if the ambient light is low you may not be able to preserve it and freeze really fast action. ![]()
